Dry Dog Food Prices Drove a $116 Basket Rise

Dry dog food prices averaged $31.39 across 12 cities on June 16 and $37.95 on July 27 for a standardized 15-pound bag equivalent, a 20.9% increase.

That $6.56 bag-equivalent increase carried into the annual numbers. Dry food’s contribution to a recurring dog retail-goods basket rose from $565.04 to $683.16, adding $118.12 a year.

The full cost of dog ownership per year basket rose slightly less—$116.48—because wet food, treats, waste bags, training pads, and shampoo collectively offset $1.64 of the dry-food increase.

The comparison follows standardized retail prices in 12 cities over 41 days for a mid-sized-dog basket of food and recurring supplies.

Dry food reached nearly 64% of the recurring-goods basket

Dry food made up 59.2% of the annual basket average on June 16. By July 27, its share had reached 63.8%.

That shift changes how to read the total. A later decline in dry dog food prices would carry more weight than a similar percentage move in waste bags or shampoo, while a continued rise would keep pressing the full basket higher.
