Pork Chop Prices Methodology

Prices are standardized to 1 lb and expressed in U.S. dollars. The lighter band shows the outer 5th-to-95th-percentile price range. The darker band shows the 25th-to-75th-percentile range. The index line uses our price index formula. The headline range compares the lowest and highest city index values on the latest observation date. Changes in the mix of observed products can also affect the index. Charts can also show lower band, medium band and upper band.

VIDEO WALKTHROUGH · 55 sec Read a price chart, using eggs Play tutorial
Read the walkthrough
  1. Choose a city and check the units

Let's read an egg-price chart using ninety days of illustrative data. Under Locations, choose View only beside one city. Keep Units set to Price. The chart shows dollars per dozen over time. Move along it to inspect a date and its values.

  2. Read the line and bands

The line labelled Index is the summary price. The darker band shows the middle half of prices. Select the lighter band in the legend to see a wider range, from the fifth to the ninety-fifth percentile.

  3. Compare cities and periods

Add another city to compare its line, or change the time range to inspect a different period. Always read the dates and units beside the chart.

  4. Build a combined total

To compare eggs with other items as one total, open Receipt Builder.
